Lore

Main Story

Once upon a time, long before Amoniak’s banishment on the Labyrinth archipelago, a high council of gods took care of the planet and its inhabitants. This council was made of the four primordial gods, Laïka, the goddess of life, Morrigan, the goddess of death, and two other gods, one for nature and one for the ocean. Those two goddesses were madly in love with each other, living, working and breathing together, no one could nor dare separate them.

Morrigan is a very generous and delicate person, despite being death itself. She always welcomes new coming souls with a big smile, taking time to talk to each and every one of them, telling them everything they need to know for their afterlife and comforting the ones in pain. Being a god allows her to know everything about the deceased's life and death, and in a way understand the trauma these souls went through. As time passed, more and more souls in need of healing came to the afterlife, scarred and depressed, some came in awful conditions, in urgent need of therapy, where some others were so unhappy with their lives, they ended it themself. The poor goddess witnessed everything through the eyes of these souls, and was deeply hurt by this, knowing some of them never experienced proper freedom or happiness in their lives.

One day she couldn’t take it anymore, and isolated herself from everyone, including her girlfriend, searching for a way to help everyone. Laïka knew this behavior, as she saw it happen once before, when they wanted to have children of their own, but didn’t want to create them with pure magic fearing they wouldn’t have a mind of their own. She knew what to do and waited, waited for Morrigan to come out and explain everything to her, so she could also help.

That day arrived quickly, quicker than she expected. Understanding the problem and the possible solution, Laïka had an idea :
“What if we give them a second life ?, she asked, what if these souls were adopted and became our children ? We could take care of them, help them go through everything that pained them and we would have children of our own !”
Morrigan’s eyes lit up in a way she had never seen when hearing this. Next thing they knew, they were in front of the council, debating about this plan.

The council wasn’t very open about this at first, but with a good compromise they accepted with a few conditions. An archipelago will be created from scratch by them, isolated from everything and everyone, so the course of nature would not be disturbed by these children of theirs. Of course, everything the souls will need to live, the god of nature and ocean will provide, with moderation of course. On another hand, the two goddesses could never go on this archipelago, but can communicate with their children thanks to an interpreter, again to keep things as natural as possible. And as the council finally agreed to those terms, the Labyrinth Archipelago was created.

Once everything was ready to welcome new inhabitants, the goddesses announced the news to all the souls, asking for some volunteers to experiment and make sure everything was ready before sending everyone who wanted to go. Three persons were selected and assigned a special role, making them protectors of the childrens. The first one was a black and white mare named Illyana, who specifically asked to be in charge of the welcoming and restoration of bodies, she was gifted with the knowledge of glyphs, the ability to borrow the goddess of life’s power and learned to sew to restore bodies to a perfect state, she was designed being the Life Protector. The second was a white stallion, Raziel, who was tasked to communicate the goddesses’ will to all of their children, making him the only Laïgan able to hear the goddesses while in the archipelago, making him the Communication Protector. The last one was a purple stallion named Morrah, who was tasked to end the lives of the children who wanted to go back to the afterlife, since the souls are stuck in the bodies and unable to escape without help, he was gifted the ability to borrow Morrigan’s power to achieve this goal and the knowledge of undoing the Life Protector’s work, he is called the Death Protector. As their souls descended from the afterlife to their new home, the Laïgan specie was officially created and breathing.

1 500 years after the appearance of this specie, Amoniak was caught stealing an artifact from Laïka and was banned after losing it. Because the council wanted to keep an eye on him just in case the artifact reappeared, they sent him to Labyrinth where the children are, and tasked them to hide and keep an eye on him. Amoniak knew he wasn’t alone, and found a way to confuse the children, making them lose sight of him while he conceived the Godlings and took care of his son Elnac. When the Godlings rioted and overpowered the god, the spell broke, leaving the godlings on the open for every Laïgan to see. The gods, furious about this trickery and knowing well the lost artifact was used to create the Godlings, ordered the Laïgan to hunt down every Godling from the Archipelago to get rid of them and give a lesson to the now absent fallen god. In this complete chaos, no one noticed Elnac, nor the whole Serapher kingdom and cities guarded by a dragon and a magic barrier.

About the Laïgans

Way of living
The Laïgans are undead creatures, meaning they technically don’t need to rest, eat or breathe in order to live. They live in three main communities, each led by a Protector. They are still close to each other and do not hesitate to communicate between them for anything (plus the Protectors are needed by everyone).
The furthest community is deep in the woods, led by Illyana, the Life Protector. Those Laïgans live during the day and tent to sleep at night in little stone cottages, surrounded by nature and animals. They do not eat much, and avoid eating flesh as much as possible. They are seen as pacifists most of the time, but if an order from their mothers is given, they will obey and destroy what is needed.Closer to the center of the forest, is a city where Morrah, the Death Protector, lives. This place is the commercial center of every Laïgan, every merchant, new business and people trying to earn money in general inhabit here. Morrah isn’t really leading the city, everyone can do whatever they want, he doesn't really care, as long as they are doing it quietly. In the center of the forest lies a huge castle, belonging to Raziel himself, the Communication Protector. All around this beautiful place are Laïgans living in extreme poverty, trying to earn enough to talk to Raziel and their mothers thanks to him. Everyone here tends to be carnivorous, eating and tearing each other apart for a little change, and are principally nocturnus.

Appearance
Laïgans’ bodies were modified in order for the soul to fit inside it and not get away like the circle of life is meant to do. The soul inside the body is secured inside an object on the body, acting like a receptacle. This isn’t enough for the soul to stay in place, so once everything is ready and the soul is where it should be, the body is marked with glyphs to stabilize the soul, trapping it inside for eternity. The only way to release the soul and allow the Laïgan to permanently die is to undo the glyphs on the body, a thing only the Death Protector can do. In addition to the receptacle being stuck inside or on their bodies, these people have three spikes poking out of their lower back and back legs. This is a hunting mechanism, these spikes can extend and a membrane will appear, created by the soul of its bearer. The pattern and color tent to attract animals, allowing them to hunt them down easely.

Abilities
With their souls trapped inside their bodies, the Laïgans cannot die, which is a blessing and a curse at the same time. Not dying means no matter what happens to their body, their soul will remain inside of it, even if the body isn’t able to function properly. Even more annoying, the body being technically dead, the Laïgan cannot regenerate themself, meaning if they cut themself (or crush one of their legs), they will be forced to see the Life Protector, the only one knowing how to restore their bodies, AND to eat flesh, as their body isn’t able to generate some making them carnivorous. Sometimes the soul seems to not synchronize well with the body, it often happens when the original soul’s body was destroyed in their previous life and a new one was assigned to them. It can lead to some motor problem, and give the Laïgan no sensation of physical pain when hurt. The Protectors have one ability coming with all of these, they can teleport themself to each other thanks to their souls being linked.
